Why is a sealed gas locker essential in a van?
Butane or propane gas used in vans is heavier than air. In case of a leak, it sinks and accumulates at floor level. If the storage compartment is not properly sealed and ventilated, the consequences can be severe: risk of explosion, poisoning, fire.
Safety and sealing
A sealed gas locker physically isolates the bottle from the living space. In the event of a micro-leak at the connection or regulator, the gas is confined and vented to the outside via a low ventilation opening. This is the basic principle of any secure gas installation in a converted vehicle.
Regulatory ventilation
The regulations applicable to converted vehicles require low-level ventilation of the gas compartment, opening directly to the outside of the vehicle. The locker must therefore be positioned to allow this type of drilling, typically in the floor or a low side wall.

Is a gas locker mandatory in a converted van?
It is not strictly mandatory from a regulatory standpoint for unapproved personal use. However, if you plan VASP approval or are using an approved bodybuilder, a sealed gas storage compartment becomes a crucial requirement. Even without legal obligation, it is a basic safety measure that we recommend in all cases.
Which gas bottle should I choose for a campervan?
It all depends on your use. For weekends or summer use, the R904 (4 kg) is generally sufficient and easy to refill in most supermarkets. For long-term travelers or setups with gas heating, the R907 (6.5 kg) offers better autonomy. The R901 remains an additional option. All three models are available in Campingaz cylinders, which can be exchanged at a wide distribution network.
How to install a sealed gas locker in a van?
Installation involves several steps: positioning the locker at the chosen location (generally behind the side door or under the exterior worktop), fixing it to the floor or structure, drilling a low ventilation hole opening to the outside of the vehicle, then connecting the bottle via an approved regulator and a compliant flexible hose.
